About Us

Savoring the Past: Museum of American Foodways is a private non-profit that allows you to grow your knowledge through an outstanding immersive food experience. You’ll learn more than you ever thought possible and grow your mind in a miraculous way. We are constantly keeping our offerings fresh through our special events, such as our upcoming Colonial Kitchen Soiree event and temporary exhibitions.

We are dedicated to enhancing the minds of our visitors at our ever growing institution. Savoring the Past doors have been open to guests since 2019. We are changing and evolving all the time in an effort to consistently offer new experiences to you and your family.

Using history, science, and technology, visitors will experience an immersive 4D experience in each area, including taste, smell and feel.  Visitors will learn about the history of American food, the science behind processing food,  and the technology of the time.

Our History

Across the nine different colonial museums and sites of the Travel through History: A Virginia Road Trip route, a gap was observed geographically and intellectually within the route at the turn of the 2010s. There is a group of five sites and museums on the northern end of the trail and a group of four sites and museums on the southeastern end of the trail. In the middle is a larger gap where a correlating museum can fill the need on the drive between each group of museums. Placing Savoring the Past at this location benefits the museum by bringing in the current visitor traffic that is in the area to learn about early American history. Everybody needs to eat. Food is a language that can cross cultures. This is why a food museum is situated in the middle of the route as a stopping point not to fulfill intellectual needs but the physical need of hunger.  The museum opened in 2019 and, throughout time, has become a popular pitstop for tourists on the Travel through History: A Virginia Road Trip route.
