Cultural Roots Cafe

Leap back in time to taste the fare of our ancestor. Delve into the cuisine of the people that came before us. Featuring cuisines from the Indigenous people of the area, Africans who were forced to work the land, and the Europeans that risked everything to start a new life.

View History with a new Lens

Learn about the culinary heritage of the United States through five permanent galleries: New England Colonies, Middle Colonies Chesapeake Bay,  Southern Colonies highlighting European, Indigenous, and African cultural cuisine, and the Beverages they drank.

History Revisited

Explore four rotating galleries throughout the museum that feature a different aspect that influenced American Cuisine.  

 

Our Culture Gallery that spotlights smaller groups such as Irish, Chinese, West Indies, and indigenous tribes of the Americas, and enslaved nationalities.

 

Our Food Processing Gallery showcases how our ancestors processed food such as Milk, Grain, and preservation methods.

 

The Trade Gallery highlights who our ancestors interacted with to obtain foods they could not get on their own.

Our Past is their Future Gallery presents where the American food culture transforms into, featuring 19th century cuisine.

Heritage Garden

NEW! 

Walk through our brand new heritage garden. This garden is meticulously cultivated for a historically accurate experience. What you see is what we use in our café.

Collections

The museum has approximately 10,000 artifacts that range from multiple sets of utensils, and kitchen equipment to a few larger items such as plows. We have two storage locations, one is for the large bulky items known as bulk storage and the other storage area is collection storage that includes cabinets and shelving for smaller items that can fit on shelves and drawers.

Outstanding Quality

 Food can be considered a humanities topic because we can use it to facilitate learning of history and the cultures from the past. Food can bring a new dimension to a story that a museum is trying to tell. We are in a foodie culture at the moment. Food is no longer just for survival but has developed into a sensory enjoyment. The younger generations are more hands-on learners than past generations, and we must be innovative to get them involved in learning history. Once a generation understands what happened in the past, this can influence events in the future in the hope that past events will not be repeated.
